Set up your Space Engineers server: editions, ports, and first start

This guide covers a Space Engineers dedicated server on OmneHosting.

Choose the edition when you order. To change edition later, open a ticket first: the server has to be reinstalled, so back up your world before you ask. See Contact support.

Edition What it is
Vanilla The official Space Engineers dedicated server.
Torch The Torch server, which adds a plugin system and admin tools.

The developer’s guidance is a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 3 logical CPU cores, and 10 GB of RAM recommended. Our plans follow that:

Plan RAM
Scout 6 GB
Outpost 10 GB
Mothership 16 GB

The server files are about 8.4 GB and are downloaded on the first start, plus your saves.

Space Engineers is a Windows server, and the panel runs it through Wine on Linux. The game files are downloaded and Wine components are installed during the first install and first start, so the first start takes several minutes. The Torch edition installs more and can take up to about 20 minutes.

Press Start and watch the Console. The server is up when you see:

Game ready...

Three ports are assigned to your server automatically and listed on the Network page. See Network and ports.

Port Used for
Game port (UDP) What players connect to.
Steam port Steam communication. Do not change it.
Remote API port The remote API, which is off by default. Do not change it.

In the game, use direct connect and enter the address and the game port from the Network page, in the form address:port.

Change your server name and description on the Startup page. The world name is set when the server is created. Game mode, player limit, and other world options belong to the world itself. See Space Engineers server settings and options.

To add Steam Workshop mods, see Add mods to your Space Engineers server.
