Game install problems (Steam games)
Many games (Valheim, Unturned, Rust, Palworld, and others) download from Steam when your server is installed or reinstalled. These are the messages and situations we see most.
How long does an install take?
Section titled “How long does an install take?”It depends on the size of the game. In our tests:

Larger games take longer. While it installs, the server shows an installing message and most actions are unavailable. See Panel error messages. The Console shows progress lines such as Update state (0x61) downloading, progress: 54.33 (...). That means it is working.
ERROR! Failed to install app (Missing configuration)
Section titled “ERROR! Failed to install app (Missing configuration)”ERROR! Failed to install app '1110390' (Missing configuration)Why it happens: Steam’s download tool sometimes rejects the very first request after it updates itself. It is usually temporary and is not a problem with your server or plan.
How to fix it:
- Wait for the install to finish, then open Settings and go to the Danger Zone.
- Press Reinstall Server and try again. On a brand-new server there is nothing to lose. If you already have data on the server, make a backup first, because a reinstall can overwrite files.
- If it fails again with the same message, open a ticket and include the last lines of the console. See Contact support.
Messages that look bad but are harmless
Section titled “Messages that look bad but are harmless”You may see these during install or first start. They do not stop the server:
WARNING: setlocale('en_US.UTF-8') failed, using locale: 'C'Downloading update (0 of ... KB)andRestarting steamcmd by requestat the very start.
The server stays “installing” for a long time
Section titled “The server stays “installing” for a long time”Why it happens: Large games download for several minutes, and some finish with a validation step at the end (verifying update).
How to fix it: Give it a few more minutes and watch the Console. If the progress numbers stop moving for a long time, open a ticket.
A required setting stops the Startup page from saving
Section titled “A required setting stops the Startup page from saving”Why it happens: Some games have a setting that must be filled in before the page will save. For example, Unturned needs a GSLT (a Steam Game Server Login Token) value.
How to fix it: Fill in the required field. See your game’s page under Games for what it needs.
