Startup, version and software-switch problems

This page covers the Startup page, Change Egg, and Reinstall. See Startup and Settings for the basics. Always back up first. See Backup problems.

I edited the startup command and now it will not start

Why it happens: A typo or wrong option in the startup command stops the game from launching.

How to fix it:

1. Open the Startup page.
2. Use Reset to Egg Default, then Save.
3. Start the server again.
4. Make custom changes in small steps, one at a time, and test each.

I changed the Docker Image and it broke

Why it happens: The image decides which runtime, such as which Java version, the server uses. The wrong one can make the game fail to start.

How to fix it:

1. Open the Startup page and pick the image you used before, or the default one.
2. Save and start the server.
3. If the image you want is not in the list, open a ticket.

Wrong Java version symptoms

Why it happens: Modern game versions need a newer Java, and older ones need an older Java. A mismatch shows up as a Java error at startup.

UnsupportedClassVersionError

How to fix it:

1. Pick a matching Docker Image on the Startup page.
2. See Change version for Minecraft Java.
3. Restart the server.

A variable value is rejected or invalid

Why it happens: Each variable has rules, such as numbers only or a list of allowed values. The panel checks them when you save.

How to fix it:

1. Read the message shown under the variable.
2. Use a valid value (for example, digits only where a number is expected).
3. If you are unsure, check the game’s page under Games.

My changes are not applying

Why it happens: Startup and variable changes take effect the next time the server starts.

How to fix it:

1. Restart the server after saving.
2. Check that you saved the page and that no red error was shown.
3. Some settings also live in the game’s own config files. Check both.

I cannot edit a variable

Why it happens: Only variables marked as editable can be changed by customers, and subusers need the startup permission.

How to fix it:

1. Ask the owner for the startup permissions if you are a subuser.
2. If the variable you need is missing, open a ticket.

A server variable I expect is missing

Why it happens: The variables differ per game and per software. Some settings are meant to be changed inside the game’s config files instead.

How to fix it:

1. Check the game’s settings page under Games.
2. Look in the Files page for the game’s config file.
3. If you think a variable should be there, open a ticket.

Change Egg gave me the wrong software

Why it happens: Settings > Change Egg switches software right away.

How to fix it:

1. Change Egg again and pick the correct software.
2. Restore a backup if you made one. See Backup problems.
3. Check the Startup page afterward, since the command and variables change with the software.

I lost files or worlds after Change Egg

Why it happens: Different software uses different folders and files, and some installs overwrite files.

How to fix it:

1. Check the Files page for your old data. It may still be there under the same names.
2. Restore your backup if you took one.
3. If nothing is left, open a ticket right away.

My plugins or mods stopped working after switching software

Why it happens: Plugins and mods are made for one type of server. A plugin for Paper will not work on Fabric, for example.

How to fix it:

1. Switch back, or get versions of the plugins or mods that fit the new software.
2. See Plugins and Server software for Minecraft Java.

Reinstall is stuck

Why it happens: Reinstalling stops the server and runs the installer again, which can take several minutes for big games.

How to fix it:

1. Wait a while and refresh. Big games can take several minutes.
2. If the banner about the installation process never goes away, open a ticket.

Reinstall wiped my files

Why it happens: Reinstall can overwrite or reset files, and cannot be undone.

How to fix it:

1. Restore a backup if you have one.
2. Otherwise, open a ticket and say what was lost.
3. In future, back up before using Reinstall.

“This server is currently running its installation process and most actions are unavailable.”

Why it happens: The server is still installing after a Reinstall, a new order, or a software change.

How to fix it:

1. Wait and refresh. You cannot use most features until it finishes.
2. If it is stuck for a long time, open a ticket.

The server is not fully installed and will not start

Why it happens: An install may have failed, for example because of a full disk or a network problem.

How to fix it:

1. Check free disk space. See Disk full.
2. Use Reinstall Server in Settings if it is safe to do so (back up first).
3. If it fails again, open a ticket.

The software I want is not in the list

Why it happens: Only certain games and software are offered.

How to fix it:

1. Check Games and the Minecraft list at Server software.
2. Open a ticket to ask if it can be added.

The server will not start on a new version

Why it happens: New versions may need a different Java image, more memory, or updated plugins and mods.

How to fix it:

1. Read the Console error.
2. See Minecraft startup and crash errors and Server won’t start.
3. Roll back by restoring your backup.
